During the month, Steve and I have been collecting seed from around the Dandenongs. I have been particularly interested in the Acer (Japanese Maple) species and have found many cultivars and varieties of A. palmatum and A. japonica. As it is a long way to travel for us, we make a day of it, pack our lunch and drinks and head off early in the morning. We usually make a few stops along the way at other places that we love to visit.
The camera is always taken and I end up spending lots of time photographing the lovely plants and trees that we come upon.
We found the lovely rose, Rosa virginiana as well. It can be weedy but like most plants, if kept under control, they can make a lovely specimen plant.
Witch hazel, Larch (Larix), Pines and Firs were also lovely to see.
Most of my bulbous seed has come from overseas; it is often the easiest and cheapest way to grow rare species.
With autumn coming on, now is the time to think about sowing seed so I must get planning before it's too late!
